We don’t get may requests for a PU (thin skin) perimeter on full lace wigs and hairpieces, as it is a material typically only requested by experienced hair wearers. PU adds some thickness to the base, but the benefit of that thickness is increased durability for the perimeter of the piece. We recently added a PU perimeter to the interior of a full cap wig for a client who loved the ease of wearing PU. PU adheres easier than lace (with any adhesive, glue or tape) and is much easier to clean. This PU perimeter is only a half inch wide, perfect for getting adhesion but without adding too much thickness to the perimeter.

Occasionally we receive inquiries from performers looking for wigs for a show, play or other stage performance. We have experience making these wigs and the knowledge of the differences between what are often called “street” wigs (for normal wear” and “theatrical wigs” worn for a performance.

Most people do not realize this, but there are differences between theatrical wigs and wigs worn for cosmetic or hair replacement purposes. Most notably, theatrical wigs are often designed for durability and comfort is a secondary concern since the wig is only worn for a few hours at a time. A stage performer is often many feet away from the audience, and small details are unnoticeable and do not detract from the performance.

We only have experience producing wigs that are designed to look like natural hair. Costume wigs, such as those for a production like Hairspray or colonial wigs, are not within our capabilities.

When people view curly or wavy full lace wigs in our retail store, one of the most common questions we get is “can I flat iron the hair?”. Yes, you can, but that doesn’t mean you should.

Switching back and forth between curly hair and straight hair is extremely time consuming. Also, the constant use of heat on any hair (biological or replacement hair), will damage the hair over time and shorten it’s lifespan. Not to mention, the whole process of changing the hair texture (whether curling or rolling straight hair or flat ironing curly hair) adds so much more time to the hair maintenance regime that you’re losing one of the main benefits of wearing a full cap hair replacement unit or full lace wig.

While it is more expensive to have two hair replacement units or full lace wigs, it actually is the better choice. Anyone consistently wearing a unit should always have a backup unit anyway (for example, if your main wig needs repairs), so having the ability to “switch off” is better than constantly changing the texture of a unit to match the way you want to wear your hair that day.

One of the pop culture phrases we use here is “doing too much” (maybe that phrase will end up being out of place in the near future), but it’s used pretty literally to describe people who are doing too much. Doing too much with a wig or hair system usually refers to shampooing every day or every other day, constant styling with heat tools, brushing and combing constantly, coloring the hair more than once, and, in this case, expecting to be able to swim in your hair system, hairpiece or wig.

People always ask us if they can swim in it and at times, we’re not even sure if the person asking actually wants to swim or if they just want to know if they can. Our answer is yes, but… swimming will damage your hair system over time. The most common response people have is “oh, the chlorine”. There are so many more chemicals in a swimming pool than chlorine. You may be shocked to know.

If you love to swim, do us a favor and wear a swim cap or remove the unit (if you’re wearing it without adhesive). Lying on your back, floating, with your hair just floating on the water, is great for television but not so much for real life. You’ll have to engage in “corrective action” with your hair system, to combat the damage of exposure to swimming pool chemicals.

But on a technical note a secure adhesive bond, and the hair itself, will hold up to swimming, but it will shorten the life span of your wig or hairpiece. And saltwater also has harmful effects on hair replacement units and wigs.

The latest trend now (which will likely become dated) is the “abundance” of Brazilian Remy hair extensions on the market. With the barriers to buying direct from China dwindling, many consumers are now able to purchase “Brazilian Remy” hair direct from Chinese exporters and trading companies. The Chinese have different business ethics than we do. While we might consider it “wrong” to claim a different hair origin, the Chinese consider this marketing. What makes matters worse is American hair sellers, either knowingly or unknowingly, marketing the hair as Brazilian also.

It’s Chinese hair. There’s nothing wrong with Chinese hair, it’s wonderful and we absolutely love it, but it’s not Brazilian hair (and it’s typically not virgin, it’s usually processed for the curl or wave). Genuine Brazilian hair is often marketed as an alternative to Caucasian hair because it often has a finer texture, a softer, bouncy wave or curl, and comes in many shades of brown– naturally. And did we mention it’s costly. Typically, 100 grams of hair costs upwards of $100 depending on length, with wavy and curly textures demanding a premium cost. Most Chinese companies do not import hair from Brazil because the duties and taxes are costly and increase the cost dramatically. Not to mention, Brazilian companies also have the technology and equipment to manufacture hair extensions, so there’s no need to export the hair to China for production.

If you want real Brazilian hair, buy it from Brazil.
